Sugar Films is a TV drama company, recently acquired by Sky Studios. I head up the production department for this busy independent production outfit. We work with Disney, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and many others.

Following research showing 87% of film crew have experienced a mental health problem and 84% had been bullied at work, I spearheaded a campaign for mental health support to be provided in the workplace. I convinced a producer to allow the project to be piloted on their film and successfully applied to the BFI for funding. I hired a full time Wellbeing Facilitator to provide mental health first aid and act as the first point of contact for anyone experiencing bullying. I engaged the large crew with the project, some of whom were initially sceptical.

For each film, I worked closely with producers and financiers to develop the production’s strategy, set priorities and agree intended outcomes. I was responsible for writing budgets of up to £16 million and motivating the team towards immediate deadlines and overarching goals. I managed HR processes, created clear financial systems to monitor expenditure, provided regular cost report updates to external funders, and managed day to day operations, all to strict deadlines. Film is a high-pressure environment, requiring quick thinking and strong evaluative judgement. My position involved engaging with a range of stakeholders: from the writer & director on a creative level, to funders, H&S regulators, industry unions, Metropolitan police, councils and insurance companies. I developed the ability to effectively balance the objectives of each stakeholder. I like to hold sit down meetings with key stakeholders to identify common ground and build working relationships to ensure everyone’s needs are given priority with the best interests of the project firmly at the centre.

I am passionate about creating opportunities for continual professional development (CPD). On each project, I brought in entry level trainees (with an emphasis on those from vulnerable or disadvantaged backgrounds) for initial meetings to evaluate their experience and goals, then devised training plans and monitored their progress with regular meetings. I engaged in a similar process with more experienced members of my team. All trainees in my department went on to find further work, more experienced team members had greater job satisfaction and our department was a more positive and productive environment.

At BBC Tours, I managed staff rotas, visitor bookings and site logistics. I also worked with risk assessments relating to visitor attractions.

As a Tour Guide and subsequently as Tour Coordinator for the BBC, I delivered a public facing and customer focussed experience. I was involved in designing the new children’s tour, creating several interactive segments based on CBBC shows, providing entertainment with an educational focus. Our presentations were re-scripted for a younger audience. Regular observation of staff/visitor interaction and close attention to visitor feedback were important to monitor continued high quality. I worked with local schools for those with learning disabilities to adapt the tour and deliver a bespoke experience.
