My first high tech job was at the Four Phase division of Motorola. Starting at Corporate HQ's Budgeting Department in Cupertino, I worked my way into sales at the San Francisco Branch Office. There, I was mentored by Randy Craven, possibly the greatest salesmen and manager I have ever known. Randy consistently led his team to being the #1 branch in the country selling proprietary mini computers and later Unix mini and super-mini computers to Fortune 500 companies. Solutions included data entry, office automation that front-ended IBM mainframes computers in wide area networked environments. These were fun and exciting times. The team's challenge was to identify and communicate Four Phase's advantages over Office Automation systems from Wang, Nixdorf, Unisys, IBM, DEC, HP, etc.). Plus, the newly emerging world of standalone and networked PCs made the whole industry incredibly dynamic. I was never bored and constantly learning.
