About Roger Cummings
I am a social practice artist and educator who draws inspiration from the North Minneapolis, South Minneapolis and Twin Cities communities where I grew up and work. Influenced by my love of the urban condition and family life, my work provides a lens through which people can see themselves included, represented and civically engaged in shaping the visual identity of their neighborhoods. My sculptures, paintings, collages and social space enhancements are multilayered and reference everything from hip-hop to urban design to sustainability. As the Chief Cultural Producer and co-founder of Juxtaposition Arts (JXTA), I have intentionally intertwined my artistic practice with my passion for social engagement and justice. By providing a space where young people can express their creativity and use their voice, JXTA embraces, supports and provides resources for the artistry and entrepreneurial spirit that exists in North Minneapolis. Together, JXTA and I have built a legacy of Black cultural production and leadership for years to come.My work is displayed in numerous public and private spaces across the U.S., including the John Biggers Seed Project, Great River Landing (façade and interior) and Rondo Commemorative Plaza. Through JXTA, I have supported several community projects locally and nationally, such as designing a skate-able art plaza in Minneapolis, MN; creating a mural that furthers a private foundation’s mission of advancing social justice and human rights in St. Paul, MN; engaging local youth and schools to collaborate on art design at a neighborhood park and teen center in St. Paul, MN; and gathering input from residents and business and government leaders to reimagine redevelopment plans for an economically depressed area of Mesa, AZ.

Roger Cummings is an artist and educator from North Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the Artistic Director and one of the founders of Juxtaposition Arts, a visual art and cultural center that teaches youth from the inner city about creating space and place through art, design, and independent livelihood, both as a form of expression and as a potential career. By applying non traditional standards of excellence in work, constructive critique, mentoring, and creative marketing of the products of young artists, Roger helps them develop a discipline for their work that can be applied to many other areas of their lives. Beginning in a Minneapolis public housing apartment in 1995, this program is now a growing art center and an active part of the curriculum in the city’s schools and the University of Minnesota. A vital thread of the work is to connect the youth to the future of their neighborhood.
