Lead Data Scientist & Project ManagerDivvey Pty Ltd Jan 2019 - Nov 2022Brisbane, Queensland, AustraliaIn this role, I was responsible for researching and developing a sophisticated machine-learning platform that the client used to enhance their consulting services by enterprise customers within tight dead lines. I was the chief engineer and data scientist. Once we had our product, we hired more developers to improve on my core code.In the beginning of this project, it included understanding concepts presented in research papers and applying these principles to produce quantifiable outcomes for the business.Then in the planning phase my role included identifying possible public and private datasets we could use to improve on the research along with acquiring the data through private VPNs connected to SQL databases, APIs and CSVs. Once we hit the prototyping phase, I implemented Python code to ingest the data, encode categorical data, balance where needed and store in a non-relational data warehouse (Redshift). This step also involved feature engineering and selection.During this phase, I also leveraged Scikit-learn, BigML and a few other techniques to identify which model would be the most appropriate for this dataset. Each model was optimised with a grid search of hyperparameters where needed, and the best model was found.Due to the demands of this project, we also considered the tradeoffs of each model in terms of training and prediction time frames on large distributed EC2 clusters. Because the best models weren't always the most commercially viable to meet project deadlines.Once suitable models were found, they were deployed and supporting software was developed to automate the maintenance, re-training of the models, and weekly predictions.The resulting predictions were delivered back into the client's internal database, and an automated client-facing Dashboard in Tableau was created to display the results in a geospatial interactive way.
