I have over 30 years of experience in advising family owned growing companies, charities and solicitor practices. During this time I have acted for some large companies, particularly in the publishing industry, but also in Property investment companies. My particular strength is I try to get to know the owners personal aims, as well as the aims of the business, then help them achieve both their business aims and personal aims in a tax efficient manner. Part of the reason that my long-standing clients have stayed with me is that they tend to rely on me as a one-stop shop business advisor. I am equally comfortable advising my clients on both personal and business tax issues. Luckily I have the strength, credibility and depth of the Haines Watts network to fall back on for any tax, accounting or business issue outside of our practice’s internal expertise.I also act for several solicitor practices. Firms of solicitors face similar challenges to most family owned businesses, and certainly similar to accounting practices. These include how to get the wealth out of the practice without paying too much tax, succession issues, raising finance to fund partner retirements and acquisitions, and whether practices should merge etc. Interestingly, I have always enjoyed working with the practice charity clients, and have become the office partner qualified to advise and sign off charities accounts. Within the team at the Bedford practice we have qualified charity auditors, and team members who were previously employed by charities. This has given us a sound base to build this specialism. Indeed, some may say that I am of a charitable disposition as I have been a lifelong supporter of Everton FC.
