My passion for what I do today started with a seemingly simple question: What do you know about the brain? Other than being pretty sure I had one, I had to admit I didn’t know much. What I soon discovered is the power of cognitive training. I observed dozens of clinicians working with individuals to help them develop their learning capacity. When I truly understood what developing one’s cognitive skills can do for an individual's potential (your cognitive profile is over 50% of your learning variance) to reach their goals in this world, I wanted every individual to have that opportunity. But there was a problem. It was too expensive for too many. Then I realized I had to bring two disparate worlds together – my newly found world of cognitive training and another world I already knew – video games. No one had ever combined the two, but I believed that, if it could be done, it could transform thousands, if not millions of lives.In due course, I assembled a team of clinicians and a team of video game developers. It was not easy and there were many times someone on the team told me it couldn’t be done. But we did get it done. And then we tested it with real kids and real parents and a serious cognitive assessment, the Woodcock-Johnson III. In that original study, students who used the program, now called BrainWare SAFARI, improved their cognitive skills by 4 years and 3 months and their academic skills by 1 year 11 months, compared to 4 months and 1 month for the control group. Today, BrainWare SAFARI is the most researched, comprehensive integrated cognitive training tool delivered online in the world.And it doesn’t stop there. We have added other outstanding neuroscience-based programs to our portfolio, including a cognitive assessment–Mindprint, and literacy programs – SkateKids, and LiteracyPlanet. Today we work around the country and the world to help educators, parents, corporate trainers, and policymakers appreciate why they need to understand how the brain learns, and how we can provide the best opportunities for success for everyone by combining the science of teaching with the science of learning.
