Principal Software Engineer
• Worked with cross-functional Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing, and Customer Support teams to deliver Dell EMC’s first generation Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA), the DP4400, which was awarded the Dell ISG product of the year in 2019, and most recently the Power Protect x400 purpose built backup appliances. These Hyper Converged Data Protection Appliances combine best of breed Data Protection software with a highly available VMware VSAN cluster. • Built initial pre-GA proof-of-concept IDPA appliances and worked with software engineering team to finalize hardware, cabling, software and configuration settings for production ready manufacturing process at launch.• Performed validation and verification of incremental VMware ESXi and vCenter builds, as well as underlying Dell EMC point products for successful integration into the IDPA platform.• Developed and delivered deployment lab environment to enable IDPA development and test engineers to efficiently rebuild their remote environments from bare-metal to support upgrades, rollbacks and re-installs as necessary.• Provided installation platform, process, documentation and training to manufacturing personnel enabling automated software installation of first generation DP5xxx and DP8xxx Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) hardware. • Researched and identified appropriate hardware platforms and system and network components for Data Protection Division appliances. This included host, network and storage switch, storage array and disk drive firmware and BIOS qualification and validation, factory and system imaging, VMware ESXi hypervisor builds and customizations, and Virtual SAN (vSAN) configuration.• Delivered FRU/CRU part replacement procedures and developed and documented minimal downtime host and network switch firmware upgrade procedures.• Provided engineering support to field personnel for critical customer escalations.
Principal Systems Integration Engineer
• Performed DVT testing of new microcode features for latest generation of firmware (Enginuity) and EMC's flagship enterprise storage array (VMAX) • Worked with partners to integrate their Alpha and Beta products with VMAX during early stages of development in an effort to address potential design issues earlier in the development cycle thereby delivering a higher quality product• Performed DVT testing of incremental early access (non-public beta) builds of vSphere 5, including ucode and VAAI integration making it possible to provide day zero support of the new platform release. Participated in weekly partner interlock and development forum to help triage and expedite solutions to problems.• Performed DVT testing of incremental early access (non-public beta) builds of Microsoft Server 2012, including ucode and ODX integration making it possible to provide day zero support of the new platform release. • As a leader in the Virtualization QE initiative tasked with introducing and expanding test coverage with Virtualization across the QE organization, provided a presentation and demonstration to the larger team to introduce Virtualization concepts. • Developed and delivered hands on lab training materials and created a VMware lab environment to allow engineers to quickly and efficiently deploy dedicated test sandboxes. The environment is built such that a single physical server is supporting multiple VMware ESXi instances running on Virtual Machines and employing VMware's DirectPath I/O configuration. The result is a configuration that serves as both a proof-of-concept and reference architecture for a cost savings configuration that will become increasingly common in the testing environment. The environment has been used as an education environment for Symmetrix Engineering teams to gain hands-on experience in a VMware environment. Configuration is extensible and able to support additional hypervisors and host operating platforms.
