Aaron Rogers is an assistant attorney general representing the State of Iowa in habeas corpus actions, which are at the intersections between state and federal courts, criminal and civil law, and appellate and trial practice. To begin his career, Rogers spent nine years as career law clerk to District Judge Harold D. Vietor, who had already been a Southern District judge for 25 years when Rogers joined his chambers. As an assistant attorney general, Rogers litigates habeas corpus cases in federal courts while also defending convictions in the state appellate courts. Rogers previously assisted Kevin O’Malley with updating the criminal volumes of Federal Jury Practice and Instructions. He currently serves on the Iowa State Bar Association’s jury instructions committee and the Iowa Supreme Court’s advisory committee on the Iowa Rules of Criminal Procedure as well as its taskforce to update the criminal rules. As a judicial law clerk, Rogers was privileged to be mentored closely by Vietor, whom Rogers came to greatly admire as a legal writer, judge, and person. In addition to his duties for Vietor, Rogers undertook additional projects for four active district judges and two magistrate judges, endeavoring to work on at least one case in every subject-matter area routinely before the court. He also assisted the pro se staff attorneys with state habeas corpus cases. Rogers grew up in Marion, Iowa, and attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon for two years. He then finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, graduating with honors in business administration. He remained in Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa College of Law as a full-tuition merit scholar. He served on the Iowa Law Review, won the Randy J. Holland Award for his student note, and graduated with distinction.
