I coach teams in all aspects of building software, with a particular focus on users and the whole process. This includes Agile practices, DevOps, automated testing, software quality, User-Centered Design, and product management.In my previous roles as a technical lead, lead developer and interaction designer I have enjoyed training and mentoring other team members. My background is in web development (which started during my Computer Science degree) and I strongly favour using open source tools.I'm increasingly drawn to considering the larger role that technology plays in society, and how it can contribute to - or harm - it. I like working with thoughtful, pragmatic people who have experience with using design to solve interesting problems.What energizes me: helping a team to incrementally improve how they're working, and being aware of the appropriate development approach to use at various different stages of a software project, changing those over time.What drains me: working on many things at the same time, with project managers adding more each day - without completing the in-progress items.

  How Might We has provided me the platform and support to be able to focus on coaching teams to improve in all aspects of software development. My main clients during this period have been Digital Opportunity Trust's South African team (DOT) and Superbalist, South Africa's largest retail ecommerce company.I joined DOTs team as a coach in order to help with product development processes, user-centered design, wireframing, quality reviews, software development training, and Agile practices.In addition, I coded a real-time messaging component in Vue and Laravel, as well as making the site a Progressive Web App with Web Push Notifications.At Superbalist my role was initial to train the frontend developers in Test-Driven Development as they launched a new internal project; that expanded over time to increase the scope and coverage of tests (including on their Laravel API backend), and into refactoring the codebases. I brought a focus on cod quality, technical design, code review, unit tests, 3rd party API mocking, and code coverage.Superbalist also asked me to review their current architecture with a view to evolving it over time. I developed the documentation necessary to describe their current architectural state, evaluated and decided on a number of enterprise architecture patterns which could apply in future, including microservices, modular monolith and service-oriented architecture, and made specific recommendations for an evolutionary approach which would lead towards more modularity and maintainability.
