When I was training to become a car technician, I was very interested in how vehicle systems operate and respond to failure modes and intentional tampering. I started to realize also that beyond many exciting designs within the vehicle, an environment was beginning to develop where manufacturers kept in touch with their cars, e.g., key programming. My curiosity could not be fulfilled as a car technician, and therefore I continued my studies and became an engineer. Many years later, I have gathered experience in engineering and type approvals and have worked closely with manufacturing and service/warranty engineers. Initially mostly in combustion engines (OBD systems, emissions controls, etc.) but adding more and more transmissions, hybrid, e-motor, and HV-battery experience. And as boundaries between the powertrain and the rest of the vehicle became fuzzy, I added ADAS, Automated Driving, and HMI experiences as well. And I am happy to say that my curiosity is still there. There is always more to learn in the automotive industry.As automotive standards started to develop, I learned to use previous experiences in what some would call a new world. ISO 26262 Functional Safety combined methods that existed before, and the goal to avoid product liability issues was also not new. ISO/SAE 21434 did that as well, and the “old” experience in making emissions systems tamper-proof was relevant once again. The statistical methods for robust design as learned in OBD are needed in other domains also. The use of quality standards to prevent or monitor for failures was a good universal lesson as well. But most of all, how to get management understanding and support (across the whole vehicle lifecycle) is a Deja Vu. But what stood out for me; while having multi-facetted problems are the standard I have never seen those as complex. I've seen others only focusing on some of the view angles or to come with very complex solutions. The skill to reduce complexity combined with negotiation skills, got me to where I am today.I use my experiences in supporting my clients, which can be on the engineering, management, homologation, or quality side.
