Worked closely with the UK Space Agency, MOD, and other government departments in the planning and ongoing delivery of the security and resilience aims and objectives in the National Space Strategy (NSS). The role included assessment of space-related risks for the National Security Risk Assessment (NSRA) and consideration of controls and mitigations to manage these risks at a national level.

Originally worked on development of quantitative risk assessment methods to assess the risks from toxic and flammable chemical major hazards and managed research in this area. Worked in assessing risks for a wider range of hazards, specialising in high consequence, low likelihood events. Appeared as an expert witness in court on tolerability of risk (TOR) and application of as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) concepts. Was involved in provision of advice on risk assessment and TOR to clients in the utilities, rail, nuclear, emerging energies, aviation, and space sectors.Led a team of risk and consequence specialists. Work included assisting the UK Space Agency and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in understanding space launch risks and how these can be managed and regulated, assisting the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in the Shoreham investigation, and assisting the Airports Commission when considering the risks from future projections of air traffic at Heathrow or Gatwick.
The Risk Assessment specialists at HSL were the science and research specialists within the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and provided expertise and support to aid HSE as well as other clients in hazard and risk assessment.The main focus of the team was major hazard risk assessment, especially in the area of process safety. This included assessment of failure frequencies, hazard identification, and consequence modelling, which included source terms, gas/vapour dispersion modelling, and flammable hazards modelling. The team also developed and had expertise in risk assessment techniques, and in the identification of measures to control and mitigate risks. The team had specific expertise in major hazard pipeline risk assessment methods and safety criteria. Other major hazards work included rail risk analysis and consequence modelling for nuclear sites.In addition to the major hazards work, the team also provided advice and reviewed risk assessments for a variety of non-major hazard scenarios.Recent work carried out by the team has included assessing the management of risks in the utilities, rail, and aviation sectors.
