What i enjoy doing most wasn’t inspired from an internship, or from reading a book. It had originated from a seemingly negligible event - my experience with Lego blocks when I was a child. When I was seven, I was introduced to my first Lego structure - a sophisticated-looking medieval castle. First, I completed it with the assistance of a step-by-step manual, but I misplaced the manual, and then I accidentally ruined the castle by tipping it over and scattering the blocks everywhere. I sheepishly modified the original design of the castle, and built it in manner of a German schloss. The fact that I could create something different from the original by using the same pieces amused me. So I went ahead to dismantle it again, took away some extra pieces and reassembled the remainder to form a 7-year-old’s interpretation of the 'Great Wall of China'. Then the cycle of deconstruction and reconstruction repeated itself again and again. This accidental exposure taught me that innovation and creativity can come in the strangest of circumstances and from the most unexpected sources, and understanding the fundamentals is essential in resolving complex problems, creating sophisticated structures or even just simply, simplifying matters (pun intended).This experience of deconstructing and reconstructing a Lego tower can be likened to managing a system, a product or even a process. The center piece represents the core functions/benefits that the system/product/process provides. Each building block added to the center piece represents every additional enhancement made. Similarly, each unnecessary block removed from a overtly complex center piece provides clarity, negates excess capacity and ultimately creates an elegant and, a more efficient finished product. Going forward, irrespective of my company and position, I believe that the mantra of ‘raze-to-the-ground, build-from-scratch, and simplify’ will remain the central ethos of both my career and my life.
