After one year of working for Unilever Research he started a PhD study in the field of structural optimization techniques applied to reduce the packaging material used for foods. The PhD, entitled Öptimisation of thin-walled packaging", was carried out in cooperation with Delft University of Technology and fully funded by Unilever Research. Parallel to the PhD study I was a Design Optimization Engineer for Unilever Research Laboratorium, Foods Packaging Unit. Reducing packaging material/packaging waste by optimizing material usage verified by numerical and experimental methods. First implementation and savings were realized for edible oil bottles in South Africa. The results have globally been implemented at margarine tubs and plastic bottles.
