Amey Management Development Programme
Between September 2014 and October 2016, I undertook a fast-track management development programme with Amey PLC, a £2.5n business, in which I gained operational, commercial, business development and people management experience. Excelling on the scheme, I have gained a broad understanding across several key sectors including Building Construction, PFI Building Management, Underground Infrastructure and Highways working with both NEC and JCT forms of contract.During my time on the scheme, I undertook 4 placements (each of which can been viewed in more detail below) and a number of training couses: • The APM Project Management Qualification - APMP• PRINCE II Foundation and Practictioner• ILM People Management Programme• Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt• Change Management• Presentation Skills• Commercial Awareness• Advanced Microsoft Excel
Mangement Development Programme - Placement 4 - Business Support Manager
My final placement on the Management scheme saw me move into Amey's Highways Division providing business support to the divisional Managing Director with the operational and strategic leadership of the newly formed £600m Highways Business Unit. Combining my project management skills with the commercial acumen gained in my previous role, I was responsible for the delivery of strategic development plans through collaboration with Business Directors and Contract teams. I supported the development of supply chain and cross contract integration and coordination at a time of company-wide restructuring and lead a key role within the PMO in the company wide restructure. In collaboration with key stakeholders across the business I also produced and managed the implementation of the Amey Highways Innovation & Business Improvement strategy.During my time on this placement, I was also able to gain APMP accreditation.
Mangement Development Programme - Placement 3 - Commercial Manager
My third placement afforded me the opportunity to gain commercial experience on a major project in Thames Tideway Tunnel - a £4.2Bn, 25Km 'super sewer' designed to alleviate the overflowing of London's sewer system into the river Thames. Amey, as the System Integrator for the project, are responsible for providing process control, communication equipment and software systems for operation, maintenance and reporting across the Tunnel system. I was responsible for the collating and sending the Project Finance (Cost Variance) Report for internal review as well as sending Amey's application for payment to the Client. These tasks have given me a solid financial understanding upon which to build. Working with an NEC Option E contract, other commercial tasks included the evaluation, production and distribution of Compensation events, Early Warning Notices and Requests for Information.During my time on this placement, I was also able to gain certification in Prince II Foundation and Practitioner.
Mangement Development Programme - Placement 2 - Project Manager
My second placement allowed me return to Amey Belfast on a full time basis as an Assistant Project Manager in support of the SPV General Manager. Working primarily across the construction-management of building capital works and the overseeing of PFI schools maintenance this placement gave me an excellent opportunity to build on and apply the skills learned in my recent MSc. My work in Belfast was primarily focused on Capital works Project Management; PFI schools management including defects management; PFI Health & Safety management; PFI Quality control mechanisms and the procurement of surveys and reciprocal payment.Primarily working with JCT forms of contract, the role afforded me with an in depth understanding of the contractual relationship between various parties and has allowed me to gain an appreciation of the importance of communicative and interpersonal skills within a managerial role.
Mangement Development Programme - Placement 1 - Business Growth Manager
This placement, primarily focused on bidding, saw me act as the Business Growth Manager for 7 of Amey's Highways accounts. Working within a small team afforded me the opportunity to play an integral role in sourcing new work and supporting our accounts throughout the bidding process. This placement provided a fantastic opportunity to become engrossed in and manage a bid submission from inception to post delivery and to understand how smaller opportunities contribute towards Amey’s compound annual growth target of 7%. Assisting with various PQQs (Pre-Qualification Questionnaire) and ITTs (Invitation to Tender), I successfully managed the submission of two PQQs with contract values of £25M and £40M respectively, both of which progressed to the ITT stage. The placement enabled me to gain a solid foundation in bidding and an appreciation for the importance of business growth / development.
Assistant Project Manager
The majority of my time in Belfast focused on the management of Minor Works projects for a local client within the Education Sector, as part of a Strategic Partnership established in 2008. Specifically, my role in involved contacting and appointing Contractors for work as requested by the client and analysing Main/ Sub-contracts and schedules of work to understand and record Amey’s responsibility across various contracts. The relatively short-term nature of projects undertaken enabled me to gain insight and experience across a variety of projects and development phases and served as an excellent introduction to Project Management. I was afforded the opportunity to apply my learning, in a practical way from the Masters Programme which was simultaneously undertaking at Queen's University.

Charity Construction Work
Earthquake reconstruction work. During July/August 2011, I spent 6 weeks working for a Spanish charity based in Peru. After the 8.2 magnitude earthquake in 2008, the city of Pisco was destroyed and in desperate need of reconstruction. During my stay I worked on a dirt bag house (a sustainable earthquake damage resistant method of construction) in the small suburb of Sarate. Engaged in the initial stages of design and along with a team of 7 I helped manage and work on the various stages of construction. I designed and built modular wall panels, a very popular construction method prevalent in the area. An excellent life experience, PSF taught me the benefits and values of Management and construction in its purest form. My input was formally recognised by my university in the form of a degree plus award.
