I am an Associate Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin. I research, I teach and I serve my College, discipline and wider society. When it comes to research, I am something of a quantitative archaeologist: with a combination of inspiration and dedication, and a little bit of luck from time to time, we can discover measures of things we had thought unmeasured or unmeasurable, and in so doing better understand the world around us. I'm particularly interested in how local outcomes (such as population or housing prices) are affected by bigger factors (such as trade policy).I started at Trinity in 2013, after completing my doctorate at Balliol College Oxford on Ireland’s 1995-2012 property market bubble and crash. Before this, I worked briefly as a Junior Diplomat for Irish Aid, and then as Economist to Ireland’s National Competitiveness Council and as Managing Consultant at IBM’s Global Centre for Economic Development. Since 2004, I have undertaken economic research for daft.ie, Ireland’s largest property website, most notably its quarterly reports on the sales and rental sectors, which are among Ireland's most prominent economic reports. I have also advised a wide range of public and private organisations, in Ireland and elsewhere, on topics including Ireland's housing market, economic policy and international competitiveness. My personal website is at ronanlyons.com and I tweet as @ronanlyons.

EconomistDaft.Ie Oct 2004 - PresentDaft.ie is Ireland's largest property website, with over 150,000 properties on the site at any one time. As Economist, my responsibility is to understand what's happening in the Irish property market and communicate key findings and trends to the wider public. To do this, I have developed a comprehensive pricing model of Irish property, and applied this to sales and lettings markets in over 16 regions around the country. The Daft Report is integral to the branding of daft.ie in the marketplace and has become one of the most widely cited economic reports in the country. Each Daft Report is featured in over 50 print articles, reaching a readership of over 1 million people, with a similar audience reach through broadcast media. The Daft Report has also become a key national economic indicator, used by the public sector including the Department of Finance and the Central Bank, the private sector including banks and stockbrokers, as well as buyers and sellers of homes, landlords and tenants. I regularly present its findings to a wide range of audiences, including institutional investors, policymakers and classes. -
