Building a small team to work on solving the problems that stem from constant news, social media, and those other influences that so easily overwhelm our lives.

After being caught up in the 2022 Censys layoff, I have been taking time to manage a full house remodel project and travel with my wife to Greece, Kosovo, and Australia.

Responsible for the entire Attack Surface Management (ASM) team which included a Front End team using Javascript and React.js, the Risk Management team, and the Reporting and Insights team. Market conditions forced a company-wide lay-off, including the entire director level of the Engineering organization.

Opened a new engineering office in Redmond, WA - in concert with the other two site execs, built the office to ~35 engineers. Was responsible for the Authentication and Endpoint (mobile and desktop) teams. Decommissioned the previous contract endpoint team and built an in-house one from the ground up. Worked with ICs to establish CI/CD pipeline and structured testing (both manual and automated.) Reduced bug backlog from hundreds to < 5 ongoing. Took over ownership of the Authentication team and managed, on average, 8 simultaneous feature and infrastructure projects with coordination with other teams within the engineering org.

Primarily responsible for the Facebook video player on Android. Rebuilt the internal API such that the player could be more widely used by other Facebook surfaces like Messenger, Instagram, Facebook Lite, and Video Profiles. Launched a variety of experiments to increase user watch time, optimize video player start time, and decrease CPU/memory load.

Responsible for the Android platform projects at autoGraph. Built the autoGraph SDK which clients use to gather consumer preferences information and present customized, ordered, and locality-sensitive offers. Built the Regent Street client application including BluetoothLE support for iBeacons and Google Maps integration.

In-class instructor for the UW PCE Certificate program in Java Web & Distributed Application Development.

Responsible for the webstore team of developers and product managers. Under my direction, the team built out an elasticsearch infrastructure both for site search and primary content delivery. Decoupled event and product publish to increase flexibility and reliability for that process. Built new customer order tracking pages. Refactored core site code from monolithic system to a distributed set of services with a common API.

One of two founders. Responsible for original product concept, design and implementation. Built lean engineering team and delivered Facebook application, web forum and mobile application to help prospective college students find the right school based on psychographic analysis – which school is the best fit to ensure a positive college experience. Built auto-scaling computing infrastructure on AWS EC2 and supporting services.

Responsible for mobile development team deploying to Android and iOS platforms. Team designed and built AroMobile, an innovative UX to deliver actionable entities extracted by the Kiha NLP servers from the users’ personal data streams. UX is presented in a suite of PIM applications (email, contacts, calendar, search) and streaming data feed. Worked to transform the team from a long sprint cycle process to continuous deployment.

One of two founders. Solely responsible for technical design and execution of product. Built Java / Flex prototype and deployed to group of test users to gather usage pattern analytics. Built production site on Django/Python and deployed on Amazon EC2/S3 array. Managed contract HTML/Javascript developers. Co-produced financial plan and investor presentations. Co-delivered investor presentations. Secured strategic alliance with area marketing firm.

One of three Engineering Directors in Google’s Seattle/Kirkland campus.Engineering responsibilities:Strategic planning for new and expanding engineering efforts in Seattle/Kirkland. Met regularly with other Engineering Directors and senior management in Mountain View to decide on direction and level of effort. Directly responsible for all Geo projects in Kirkland. GeoStore backend – takes geographic data from a wide variety of sources, imports, conflates, and presents in a coherent schema to internal geo customers. Map tile painting – one of the internal GeoStore customers. Generates all the map tiles for maps.google.com website, mobile applications (including iPhone) and vector packets for Google Earth. Direction routing – calculates driving directions between points. Previously used a 3rd party library, the recently released Google version is so fast (~20ms per route) that we were able to implement draggable routes on top of it. Traffic – real-time traffic analysis and presentation on maps.google.com. Google Pack – Windows client software for install and auto-update of the various Google client applications – Talk, Earth, Picasa, etc. and several useful OSS or 3rd party applications as well – Firefox, Norton AV, Skype, etc.Site responsibilities: Recruiting and hiring including working on the engineering hiring committee. Advised and helped coordinate the college intern program. Worked with Facilities Planning including lease acquisition and expansion, new building planning, valet parking negotiation, food quality management (note: Google has people specifically dedicated to many of the facilities projects so most of my role here was advisory.) Community interaction – WTIA board member, coordination meetings with Kirkland Chamber of Commerce, and local speaking engagements as a Google representative.

One of four original employees. Built engineering group, designed and delivered MobiLens ASP.NET website, the company’s flagship product. MobiLens generated 3.2 million in revenue in its first year. Built and managed the team which delivered the M:Panel mobile device metering system – software on Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, and Java/J2ME mobile devices to directly monitor and report user activity. Designed and implemented the server side of the M:Panel system. Specified and built-out NOCs at InterNAP in Seattle and London. Authored two patent applications for new technologies in the field of mobile data acquisition. Technical and business development liaison to a variety of companies including Nokia and Microsoft. M:Metrics was acquired by comScore.

Held primary responsibility for the design and development of the Mobile Web Services Platform and a number of the products in the mobile utility suite including over-the-air device backup and update. Coordinated efforts of the client and server development teams. Managed combined development team of 14 engineers and mentored junior developers. Researched new platforms and technologies and incorporated them into our efforts as appropriate. Authored four patent applications for new technologies in the field of mobile communications. Action Engine was purchased by MobUI in 2008.

One of three founders. Managed distributed engineering staff of research engineers working on new collaborative filtering algorithms. Business and technical liaison with a variety of partners. Architect and primary developer for moviecentral.com site. Network admin for both corporate and production systems.

One of four founders. Managed small senior engineering staff. Successfully executed contract development project for MCI. Served as Corporate Secretary. Participated in the design and development of the Secure Messenger Toolkit – an S/MIME data encryption toolkit for Windows developers – and the Secure Messenger client – a set of security plugins for Outlook, Eudora, and other popular e-mail clients. Began development of the WorldSecure Server high-volume e-mail relay. Deming Software was purchased by Worldtalk Communications in 1996.Continued work on the WorldSecure Server e-mail relay begun at Deming Software. Integrated virus scanning and embedded document scanning services. Technical liaison for a variety of Fortune 1000 clients. Worldtalk Communications was subsequently purchased by Tumbleweed Communications.
