Responsible for rolling out the OCIMS vessels tracking system as well as developing new tech like, Bayesian vessel classification from radar images and historical AIS, fancy new database structures to reduce user wait times on vessel history requests, data fusion between imagery, radar tracks and vessel transponders. Also looking into fun things like mapping kelp around small sub-antarctic islands from space and presenting at international conferences.

Researching machine learning methods to get better information out of satellite synthetic aperture radar images with focus on maritime domain awareness. Also working on smart sensors for water monitoring, geospacial data processing of ship transponder messages and maybe, one day soon, satellite package integration.A mouthful. Mainly I look for illegal fishing in black and white radar images and try to figure out how to get a dumb machine to do it too.More formal:• Research and development of algorithms to automatically classify vessels from SAR radar images• Research of algorithms to match transponder data to vessels detected by radar• Development of remote, cost-effective, smart sensors for various applications including vessel detection and water flow monitoring• Some software defined radio stuff. Lots of fun• Database visualization of all this data• Automated report generation of foreign-flag fishing vessels• Publish and present all this work

I was a member of the 69th overwintering team on Marion Island. My duties were to install, maintain and operate any equipment required for communication around and off of the island.Some other aspects of the position included:• Motivating a team and providing management and leadership• Staying driven in a lonely, remote and harsh environment• HF operation and design of new HF antenna for island operation• Maintaining and troubleshooting satellite link and internal network without support• Installation of simple photo-voltaic energy systems

I enjoyed my time at Parsec as a design engineer. I was responsible for the documentation, design, production, testing and integration of several boards for a RADAR system. Some tasks I performed include:• Design of hardware requirements• Documentation of hardware design choices and notes• Schematic design and simulation• Management of PCB design and production• Management of PCB population and component ordering• VHDL design of test programs on radar platform• Performing testing and documentation of boards• Integration of boards into larger RADAR system

After my undergraduate degree I applied for the South African National Antarctic Expedition. I was appointed as a scientist working for the HMO (now a part of SANSA). Some of my duties included:• Monitoring multiple scientific installations• Installing new scientific experiments in Antarctica as well as on Gough Island• Writing new software to filter, analyse and display data• Managing the logistical problems resulting from being resupplied once annually• Ordering of new equipment for following teams
