About Rory Speirs

I get a buzz out of creating elegant systems that solve complex problems. With deep roots in optical physics and quantum mechanics, problem solving and science communication are the core of my skill set.I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow developing the next generation of laser-cooled, ultra-bright ion beams for nanoscale milling and microscopy. My research career has led me to explore several areas of physics, and I have an ongoing interest in many branches of optical and atomic physics, quantum optics, electron and ion beams, electron and X-ray diffraction, and biological photoacoustic imaging.While I am primarily an experimentalist I regularly dive into pen-and-paper theory. I also create high fidelity computer simulations of the physical system we are experimenting on, using the latest computational tools (largely accessed from the Python programming language) to maximise computational performance while minimising development time. Analysis of large volumes of complex, sometimes heterogeneous datasets comes along for the ride with both experiment and simulation.I also make a hobby out of designing high performance laboratory equipment using FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) which leverage reprogrammable fast digital electronic circuits.I have a keen interest in scientific education and outreach. I have written articles for non-specialist audiences, created educational displays for science festivals (including a Mission Impossible style 'laser maze'), and presented geophysical and atmospheric science to passengers aboard a 474 jetliner flying over Antarctica.
