I am a Patent attorney and partner at Quarles & Brady. I'm an engineer turned lawyer with a passion for solving problems that span legal, technical, and business issues. I focus my practice on patent prosecution, intellectual property licensing, transactional due diligence, and other intellectual property issues for companies.My experience includes the prosecution of patent applications in a variety of technology classes, including for mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and algorithmic inventions; strategic building and management of global patent portfolios; and preparation of infringement and freedom-to-operate opinions, including in preparation for inter partes reviews. I frequently advise on infringement risks and enforcement and defensive strategies, and drafts and negotiate all manner of IP-focused transactional agreements, including for the purchase, sale, and licensing of rights in patents, software, know-how, and trade secrets.As part of my transactional practice, I have assisted clients with intellectual property due diligence for a variety of business arrangements, including mergers and asset transfers for both large and small entities. I also help clients navigate the complexities of joint technology development, including providing training on best practices for non-legal staff, and assisting in the detailed structuring and management of formal joint development agreements.While I am not primarily a litigator, I frequently assist with technical analysis and strategic planning for U.S. patent litigation. In addition to U.S. patent litigation and enforcement/defensive strategy, I advise clients regarding non-U.S. patent litigation and have served as U.S.-based coordinator and strategic lead for defensive and offensive patent suits in Europe, Asia, and South America.My engineering background is focused on thermal fluids, including multi-phase flow and heat transfer, and I have industry experience in modeling and field management for oil and gas production. While I'm always happy to lean on this background, I also work with clients on a variety of other technologies, including traditional and advanced manufacturing, construction products, heavy machinery, hydraulic and electronic systems, valves and controls, machine vision and optical systems, mobile applications, and other algorithmic innovation.
