At Origin Rose I co-led an ML focused software consultancy and incubator. I led the R&D efforts for our client projects as well as our own ideas that resulted in many provisional patents and 5 issued patents. We developed novel deep learning models to solve a variety of customer problems in transportation (predictive models for shipping and fuel use), energy sensor data (acoustic analysis of high frequency well head pressure data), satellite image analysis, and designed and developed software platforms used by some of the biggest companies in energy, the intelligence community, and transportation. We spun out two companies from ideas developed at Origin Rose.

At ThinkTopic we combined expertise in machine learning and systems engineering to develop new technologies and custom solutions for our clients. Our portfolio included a geo-spatial analysis platform for the Asian Development Bank, an engineering physics application for the solar industry, a full business solution for an international art dealer, and an innovative e-commerce platform using computer vision and a custom information retrieval system for Style.com at Conde Nast. Starting as a two person consultancy and with zero outside investment, we grew ThinkTopic to a 23 person team and doubled revenues each year for 3 years.

I was one of the first engineers hired at DeepMind, and I worked on a wide range of projects. I built a simulated virtual world with 3d graphics and physics, and I worked on brain inspired models of spatial memory and navigation. Later I helped develop and improve a variety of deep learning models including auto-encoders and convolutional networks as well as a distributed information retrieval system. My libraries and tools were used across the research team, and I often helped researchers to improve their deep learning code to make it composable, debuggable, and understandable.

I was the first Software Architect at GlobalOrange, a growing IT services and consulting company based in Amsterdam. We worked with newspapers, real estate companies, travel agencies and entrepreneurs to design and develop custom web solutions for their different business needs. My role was to design the service oriented architectures for the larger projects, and then help our development teams to successfully implement the systems and deal with problems that arose.

I came to Amsterdam on a grant from the Swiss science foundation (SNF) to collaborate with Professors Spyros Voulgaris and Maarten van Steen in the distributed systems group at the VU. They helped me to formulate and design Plasma, a concept for a common programming and data model abstraction on top of which many types of distributed algorithms and services can be implemented.

Did basic research in large scale distributed algorithms for peer-to-peer networks. Worked on routing algorithms for constructing and maintaining churn resistant distributed hash tables, gossip algorithms for efficient dissemination of network diagnostics, and developed a substrate based on the abstraction of a graph database to experiment with programming more declarative distributed systems.I instructed undergraduate programming, and I designed the curriculum and co-instructed two semesters of a course on database backed web applications.

At Boulder Labs we specialized in helping startups to develop custom software to solve hard problems. I worked on image analysis for an antibiotic susceptibility testing system, a facial recognition based relationship engine for sorting photographs that is still used on major cruise ships around the world, and a statistical modeling tool to help increase the birth rate of cattle using remote sensing. We worked closely with doctors, scientists and entrepreneurs to understand their immediate needs for upcoming experiments or demos, and then we would iteratively implement what was needed to continue improving the systems.
