Three of my former direct reports were promoted into leadership positions on the team. * Serving as a team lead on company-wide multi-team collaborative efforts to develop and launch new Foundation Medicine products. * Leading a cross-functional effort to develop criteria and an SOP for distinguishing clinically significant variants from variants of unknown significance (VUS); this variant classification was used for variant inclusion/exclusion determination in all Foundation Medicine products. * Providing scientific leadership and expertise in defining the Companion Diagnostic (CDx) for the MET exon 14, NTRK and ROS1 CDx filings and in addressing feedback from the FDA. * Participating in recruiting efforts and hiring decisions within the TOCR team, including managing all aspects of the hiring effort when the Head of the team was on FMLA leave; four PhD Scientists were hired during that time.* Leading and contributing to Foundation Medicine publication efforts – authored or co-authored 14 publications at Foundation Medicine. * Personally contributing to generation and review of over 50,000 patient reports.

2014-2021 At Foundation Medicine, I managed and mentored a group of 3-7 PhD Scientists in day-to-day operations, projects, leadership and career development.2003-2008 I supervised four technicians at various times in Dr. Paul Garrity’s laboratory at MIT and then at Brandeis University. I helped explain their projects to them, helped them design experiments and taught them the necessary techniques. Specifically, I supervised their efforts in plasmid generation and manipulation, PCR, fly genetics and fly husbandry, microinjections, biochemistry, microscopy and histology.
Postdoctoral Fellow
I was investigating mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation mediating defense gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana. Innate immunity in plants and animals is a complicated multi-layered and multi-step process and the molecular picture of how microbe detection leads to the activation of defense genes and to triggering defense is mostly unclear. I have been developing a technology to biochemically identify transcription factors whose occupancy of defense promoters is altered during defense elicitation and characterizing the roles these factors play in innate immunity.
Postdoc
Continuing my study of temperature perception in Dr. Paul Garrity’s laboratory at Brandeis, I identified TRP and TRP-like ion channels as important mediators of cold temperature perception. I also isolated a mutant defective for the perception of strong cold temperatures but not for the perception of mild cold temperatures, suggesting that as in mammals, strong and mild cold sensations are mechanistically distinct in flies. I mapped this mutant to a small region of the genome and other members of the Garrity laboratory are following up on my findings.
Graduate Student
I studied molecular mechanisms of temperature perception in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Garrity, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. I set up a larval temperature preference behavioral assay and identified dTRPA1, an ion channel known to be activated by heat, as a key mediator of an avoidance response to elevated temperature. I further found that similar to mammalian body temperature sensors located within the brain, dTRPA1-expressing cells required for temperature perception were located in the Drosophila central brain.Related news story: http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2004/hotfly.html

I served as a Teaching Assistant for course 7.16, the Drosophila cell culture Project Lab, taught by Drs. Mary-Lou Pardue and J. Troy Littleton. Students in this laboratory course were assigned to determine subcellular localizations of heterologously expressed Huntington protein fragments. I helped the students understand the rationale for these experiments, to design strategies for tagging specific fragments of Huntington protein with fluorescent protein tags, to transfect the resulting constructs into Drosophila cell culture cells, to examine the subcellular localization of the Huntington fragments using fluorescent microscopy and to interpret their results.

I served as a Teaching Assistant for course 7.20, Human Physiology, taught by Drs. Monty Krieger and Robert Rosenberg. As an undergraduate student at Northwestern University I explored the molecular basis of ubiquitin-dependent endocytosis of signaling receptors in the laboratory of Dr. Linda Hicke. I characterized a new endocytosis mutant isolated in the lab, demonstrating that this mutant functioned in endocytosis downstream of receptor ubiquitination and interacted with the actin cytoskeleton.
