I like solving problems with data.I would be very happy if there was a booming market for jigsaw puzzlers and professional stay-at-home strategy gamers. Since there isn’t, I look for problems at my job and find ways to solve them. Everybody has problems. Finance has problems, Sales has problems, Ops has problems, even IT (who is supposed to be solving problems) has problems.Whether it’s Customer Retention (Who’s buying our product?) or Business Development (Who’s not buying our product?) or COGS management (Who buys 100 cases of paperclips?) or WIP control (Why are you working on next weeks order today and last weeks order tomorrow?) or purely technical (Why does this ETL job fail every Friday?) – there are endless problems every organization has to solve in order to be successful.Sometimes the problems are ones the organization doesn’t even know they have. Why does Crimson outsell Navy Blue everywhere but the Mid-Atlantic? Why isn’t the 50+ crowd finding my website? Do four people really open and close an order before someone starts working it? Why is it taking us 6 months to bring a product to market when our competitors do it in 2 weeks? And you can't stop. You fix one problem you have to find another one.There are probably answers to your problems in the data you already have. And if not, there are plenty of ways to get the data necessary to solve the problems.The first step is finding someone who can leverage data to solve problems and putting them on the payroll. That’s it. There’s only one step.
