Responsibility for tooling within the Server Hardware Engineering team: to define & manage a product-based approach to server tooling in order to improve reliability, transparency and simplify on-boarding of new hardware platforms. Employed originally as Senior Unix Engineer, promoted to Team Lead and then Manager. The firm was enjoying explosive growth and needed to rapidly increase capacity while also increasing system stability. Ultimately I managed the offshore Systems Engineering team in Argentina from London, working closely with the local datacenter team to achieve our goals. I was the main operations & engineering point of contact for new application planning.Highlights:- Systems management of over 500 Unix servers (blades, 2 & 4 socket rackmount and Sun servers).- Automated builds and configuration so that Linux servers can be rebuilt remotely within 10 minutes.- Worked with application teams to architect new applications brokering agreement with dev/QA teams and business sponsors.- Hands-on support of environment/networking problems for production, development and QA.- Built Linux the kernel for lastminute.com, highly optimised, patched and packaged for simple deployment.- Refined disparate Apache instances into one unified web tier, custom built from source into RPM package replacing 8 Solaris legacy webservers with 4 Linux ones.- Reworked kickstart Linux build system to simplify and stabilise.Scripted manual processes and • built packaged infrastructure tools into RPMs to automate time-consuming tasks.

Insight UK acquired Action PLC and as part of this I was asked to become a senior solutions engineer to manage the UK web platforms.
