About Roy Kim

Roy Kim is an entrepreneur and a chemical engineer who loves to explore the wonders of nature. Roy started his learning journey at The Knowledge Society (TKS), where he learned invaluable skills in business and technology to solve the world’s biggest problems. As a consultant to multiple billion-dollar companies such as CAE and Walmart, he worked directly with executives in conducting market research and finding new revenue streams. To realize his dream of a circular economy, he developed his own bioplastic startup, Sealxlabs, in which he raised 15,000 dollars in capital. He’s also explored aerogels to bring cheaper desalination to the market, presenting his research at the Global Material Science Conference. Recently, he's extended his research to develop bioplastic films using sodium alginate with various companies and universities for SealXLabs. He is publishing his work in various accredited research journals.

Mosaic Pieces is a journal that incubates innovations that solve global problems. It is a journal for high school students to publish research papers in STEM they've written from school or start new research projects with the resources we offer. We're partnered with Northeastern University, Newcastle University, and the CEO of Pond Biomaterials to mentor young researchers and help them improve their research projects. We also provide countless articles on how to improve not just one's research project but the entire research experience (from grants to internships), as well as providing templates to help new researchers get started. To accelerate the innovation ideation process, we host an annual 48-hour hackathon with a $100 cash prize.

The primary channel I use to promote this message is through the East Bay Regional Parks District. As an avid volunteer, I help restore damaged ecosystems, conduct ecological research to preserve native species, and occasionally participate in plastic clean-ups.
  • Sealxlabs
    Co-Founder & Cto
    Sealxlabs Apr 2022 - Present
SealXLabs is an LLC that started in the summer of 2022. The startup was first launched after the Sealx team, and I placed well in a moonshot competition. Our product line is a bioplastic film synthesized in ambient conditions with water-based reactions. After winning a research grant for $15,000, we explored different materials, from alginate to chitosan, and now we are currently studying sodium alginate. We are mentored by highly acclaimed professors from MIT and UC Berkeley. The applications for the technology are primarily single-use packaging for retail and other household goods.Published our research in the Journal of Emerging Investigators.

  • Newcastle University
    Research Intern
    Newcastle University Nov 2022 - Jul 2023
Studied the synthesis of chitosan aerogels with a freeze-drying method alongside faculty from Newcastle University. We explored the application of these materials as an alternative to desalination. I presented my research at the Global Material Science Conference and published it in the Journal of Student Research.
  • The Knowledge Society (Tks)
    Activator
The Knowledge Society (Tks) Jun 2022 - Jun 2023
The Activate Program at TKS is an extension of the previous Innovate program. Instead of focusing on learning about the different problems in the world and emerging technologies, the Activate program emplored students to apply new technologies in radical solutions to solve these massive problems. I learned more practical skills in this program, such as killing projects early, deep chemistry, market segmentation, business finance, and different business strategies. Once again, I was given another consulting opportunity for a company called CAE, which is a Canadien simulation company that produces aviation training equipment. In conjunction with this experience, I landed a research fellowship at Roote, got lab space for my startup, Sealxlabs, and presented my technical research at the Global Material Science Conference.
  • The Knowledge Society (Tks)
    Innovator
The Knowledge Society (Tks) Sep 2021 - Jun 2022
The TKS Innovate program was where my love for engineering and business really began. It was from this program that I learned some of the world's biggest problems, emerging technologies, how to network with experts in professional industries, how to leverage LinkedIn, and hustle for external opportunities such as internships. It was such a pleasure to meet so many like-minded people and discover what I wanted to do in the world. Through TKS partnerships, I was able to get a consulting opportunity at Walmart Blue Labs, as well as receive the necessary mentorship and guidance to start an LLC in an area I was really passionate about. Most importantly, I learned how to get shit done. Whether it was learning how to 3D model, analyze businesses, work in a team, and create professional pitches, TKS taught me I didn't need school to learn new things. My main project revolved around working with biomimicry to improve urban infrastructure in cities around the world.
  • Various Companies
    Business Consulting
    Various Companies Mar 2022 - Apr 2023
    United States
In the spring of 2022, I worked with Blue Labs, the research and innovation department at Walmart, as one of the young business consultants from TKS to design a store of 2030. We were tasked with analyzing customer demographics, introducing new technologies to a Walmart store, and bringing fresh ideas to truly make Walmart stores an immersive experience. From this experience, I learned how to communicate with customers, match customer wants, and was exposed to a variety of technologies ranging from VR to AI.In the spring of 2023, I consulted for CAE as a part of the TKS Challenge event. My team and I were tasked with finding a new market for CAE to penetrate using their heritage in VR/AR simulation technology. After extensive market research, mentorship from TKS directors, as well as some in-person interviews, we decided to recommend the first-response industries, specifically firefighting training, as a new market for CAE to enter. From this experience, I learned invaluable management skills as the project manager, communication skills in interviews, as well as extensive market/business analysis skills.
