When I started working at Steelcase’s steel plant, I quickly realized that I needed to learn about the different manufacturing capabilities and challenges people face on different scales. To achieve this, I reached out to 18 different employees ranging from assembly line workers to operations engineers to production planners within the first two weeks and scheduled educational walks with each of them to gain a broader understanding of the different value streams within the plant. Learning about the flow of materials and manufacturing processes significantly helped me with the projects I was assigned. Since Steelcase creates a large variety of furniture products, I was tasked with performing time studies of 25 products to determine inefficiencies on the assembly lines and ways to optimize them. The solution I proposed involved splitting the assembly lines based on work content and distributing labor differently in each one, which has the potential to increase production capacity by 32% if implemented! In addition to my engineering projects, I also had the opportunity to work on two different business cases. One of them involved adding a device to a laser cutting machine that eliminates a rough edge on thick material, saving $37,500 yearly. For the second business case, I created an automated shipping planner tool on excel to determine the storage requirements for a new process in the manufacturing plant. Through my analysis, I determined that only 50 storage spaces would be required as opposed to the initial assumption of 100. This will save about $100,000 in racking and reduce the floorspace needed.
