About Ruby Thompson

While studying Sociology at Skidmore College and taking on leadership roles on campus such as Swimming and Diving Team Captain and Peer Mentor, I developed a passion for learning, community building, and mentorship.One of my favorite courses that I took while attending Skidmore was "Restorative Justice in Schools," taught by Professor David Karp. This course provided me with a more in-depth explanation of what restorative justice is, how it can be and is implemented in schools, and the opportunity to co-design and facilitate six restorative circles in a local high school. This experience was incredibly rewarding and sparked my desire to work with high school students.Currently, I work as an Academic Coaching Associate (ACA) with the Schuler Scholar Program at Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep (CRSM). In this role, I primarily support our Junior and Senior Scholars through 1:1 coaching, group programming, and collaborating with other staff members on our school team. As this is a new role for CRSM, I am building out what this role will look like at our school-site and am optimistic for the potential of more consistent, sustained, and continued coaching support for Scholars as they age through the program.Prior to becoming an ACA, I worked for two years with the Schuler Scholar Program as an AmeriCorps Reading Scholar Coach. My years as a Scholar Coach have been incredibly formative and fulfilling, and I am so grateful to continue supporting the amazing Scholars whom I have built meaningful relationships with over the years. Continuing on with Schuler has further helped me learn and grow as a mentor, facilitator, leader, listener, advocate, and person.I am enthusiastic to continue learning and growing my skill-set as I explore my passions for mentorship, education, and equity professionally and personally.Outside of work, I love to exercise, watch food-related content, cook, and learn about home DIY projects and crafts.Graduate of Skidmore College with a BA in Sociology with Honors.GPA: 3.75Magna Cum LaudeMinors: English (literature focus) & French

    The Schuler Scholar Program is a college access program operating in and around the Chicagoland area. It’s mission is to equip high-achieving and underrepresented students to gain access to and succeed at highly selective colleges and beyond. Schuler Scholars are typically first-generation college-bound, are students of color, or come from low-income families.As a Scholar Coach at Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep, I engage with Scholars in both one-on-one and group settings. During my one-on-one meetings, I work with a caseload of 9th and 10th graders to develop critical thinking and executive skills, and provide academic as well as social-emotional coaching and support. In addition to these coaching sessions, I plan and facilitate learning enrichment opportunities after school and through meaningful excursions.Some of the topics for after school, class-specific programming that I have facilitated include: Transitions to High School, Freshman Writing, Sophomore Writing ("personal narratives"), and Transitions to Summer College Programs for the Sophomores. Some of my favorite enriching excursions that I have planned are trips to the Milwaukee Repertory Theater for performances of "In the Heights" (2018) & "Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter," (2020) with 9th graders, symphonic performances of the film "Coco" & a Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert with 12th graders, and a trip to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium with 9th and 10th graders.Also as a Scholar Coach, I have taken on numerous coordinator roles for my school team including: Office Manager (current), Summer College Program Coordinator (current), Scholar Coach Recruitment Coordinator (current), Camp Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, and Scholar Selection Coordinator.
