Beryllium R&D at Materion is a team effort. We are a group of engineers and technicians that collaborate on projects; that are market or customer driven. Working mostly from verbal instructions, design, build, fabricate and test; new processes, ideas or prototypes. Based on results, decide to continue or abandon a project. Daily activities could include; preparing metallographic samples, maintaining equipment, specify and order supplies or equipment, writing reports or build something needed for a project. The work is technical and creative; I find this very satisfying and enjoyable.

Hired as Production Supervisor. Evans produces water based and PSA adhesives, in small batch quantities. Direct supervision of 10 union and 3 non union production employees. Promoted to Assistant Plant Manager and Site Safety Manager after one year. Helped with design and construction of new Pressure Sensitive hot melt adhesive line. Scheduled production and daily work assignments. Responsible for facilities maintenance and staff. Revised safety program to be OSHA compliant with aid of Human Resources staff.

Built and verified performance of Magnetic Materials Testing Equipment, Electromagnet Systems, related hardware and standard products catalog items. Systems were PC software driven. Scheduled production of 2-3 systems ($200K-$500K) per month. Performed product acceptance testing, maintained quality records. Coordinated materials purchasing using MANMAN based MRPII. Ensured products complete as ordered and packaged for international shipping.

Began work as R&D Lab Technician, promoted after two years to Supervisor. Followed prototype Cryogenic Vacuum pumps into production. Improved products, manufacturing techniques and inventory levels. Supervised all pump products based on success with cryogenic vacuum pumps. Direct supervision of 7-10 union employees. In house contact for customer service and repairs. Responsible for verifying product quality, testing and records. Coordinated inventory levels and shipping.

I signed up for a two year enlistment right out of high school. Probably the best thing I could have done for myself at the time. The discipline and training was fast and effective. I learned about steam powered turbine engine systems. The preventative maintenance system is something I have continued to apply throughout my life, "Fix it before it breaks".
