Role of functional groups in Skin and Mucosal AdhesionLehigh University - National Starch● Conducted studies to measure the work of adhesion due to specific interactions, based on JKR theory of contact mechanics, between skin mimics (ceramides, patterned surfaces) and surface treated ideal elastomers and wafer silicon. Conducted surface modification of PDMS by polyelectrolytes, plasma prepped silane treatment.● Automation and Integration of the experimental apparatus using linear motors, CCD’s and force sensors to determine the work of adhesion between two surfaces. Significantly improved learning cycles from 5 per week to 500 per week by automated experimental runs, realtime data analysis, integrated graphing and regression curve fitting to determine the adhesion and hysteresis coefficients. ● Setup a unique zeta potential measurement device using a capillary electrophoresis cell. Experiments were fully integrated into automated data acquisition and image recognition routine to calculate the relationships between the velocity of fluorescent tagged nano particles with applied electric field to derive the zeta potential of the interacting surface.
