The Abbasids overthrew the Umayyads and established their capital in Baghdad. This era is known for the flourishing of Islamic culture, science, and philosophy. While the Abbasid caliphate grew in influence, local dynasties began to assert control over various regions, weakening central authority. The Mongol invasion in 1258 marked the end of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad.

The Ottoman Empire, which began in the 13th century, became the most powerful Islamic state for centuries. In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim I claimed the title of caliph, positioning the Ottoman rulers as the leaders of the global Muslim community. The empire’s vast reach and its centralized rule from Istanbul helped shape the political, cultural, and social life of the Muslim world. The Ottoman Caliphate lasted until its formal abolition by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1924 as part of his secularizing reforms in Turkey.

Throughout history, various Islamic states, such as the Mughal Empire in India, the Safavid Empire in Persia, and the Mali and Songhai empires in Africa, governed according to Islamic principles while adapting to local conditions and customs.

Many contemporary Muslim-majority countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Pakistan, have incorporated aspects of Shariah into their legal and political systems to varying degrees. However, the idea of a unified Islamic caliphate, as seen in the early Islamic period, remains largely symbolic in modern geopolitics.

The first Islamic state was established in 622 CE when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers migrated to Medina in 622 AD. This event marks the foundation of an Islamic polity, where the Prophet became both a spiritual and political leader. It was based on the Constitution of Medin. One of the earliest written constitutions in history, the Constitution of Medina, was drafted by Muhammad. It provided a framework for governance, addressing the rights and duties of Muslims and non-Muslims (Jews, Christians, etc.) within the community. Muhammad’s state in Medina was based on principles of justice, social welfare, and accountability, guided by the Qur’an and Sunnah (his practices).

After the death of Muhammad, the first four caliphs, known as the Rashidun “Rightly Guided”, expanded the Islamic State through military campaigns, governing vast territories based on Islamic law and principles.Abu Bakr (632-634 CE) was the first caliph, followed by Umar ibn al-Khattab (634-644 CE), Uthman ibn Affan (644-656 CE), and Ali ibn Abi Talib (656-661 CE). This period saw the rapid expansion of the Islamic State beyond the Arabian Peninsula, reaching as far as North Africa, the Levant, and Persia.

The Umayyads continued the expansion of the Islamic State, establishing a centralized administrative structure. They moved the capital to Damascus and expanded into Europe, with a notable presence in Spain (al-Andalus). The Umayyads were criticized for turning the caliphate into a dynastic monarchy, but they played a crucial role in the spread of Islam and the development of Islamic civilization.
