My research utilised Internet of Things (IoT) and… Show more As a recently qualified Doctor of Engineering (PhD), my researched focused entirely on the application of technologies for the purpose of sustainability and the reduction of energy consumption within commercial buildings. My thesis was entitled "Occupant-Centric Energy Management for Small Commercial Buildings".I am passionate about sustainability and particularly enabling commercial organisations to reduce their environmental impact. My research utilised Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce energy consumption within commercial buildings. It demonstrated an annual energy reduction of more than 10%. Research included:• Working with a number of energy modelling tools.• Creating a Python-based smart building mapping and modelling environment.• Developing algorithms to assess existing wireless sensor network deployments.• Working with edge-based IoT devices.• Developing AI machine learning architectures to simultaneously analyse multimodal IoT data to determine occupancy, occupancy comfort levels and building conditions.• Combining these techniques to create an occupant-centric energy management system which improved the temporal match between occupants and energy consuming systems to automate the reduction of building energy consumption.• Writing and publishing technical findings in a number of research journals.• Presenting research findings at multiple conferences.• Presenting research to Undergraduate and Master’s students.• STEM event delivery in a number of schools.Alongside my research, I also worked on several commercial projects including:• Research Assistant for BASEE Greater Manchester SME Zero Carbon Accelerator Feasibility Study.• Writing project proposals and funding applications for my research team.
