People ask me what a financial planner really does. I tell them I have a very fun job. I spend my day putting together jigsaw puzzles. That raises some eye brows! But it's true. Every client I work with is different. They have different goals, different desires, and different financial situations. My job is to put the picture together for them. What's the picture? We each have all these pieces in our lives. We have kids, parents, taxes, investments, 401(k)s, health insurance plans, insurance, college funds, Wills and trusts. Etc. Etc. Etc. We have goals: Retirement life style, travel, college for our kids, the vacation home. Each of these things is a piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Each one by itself would be a perfect piece. Your accountant may do your tax return perfectly, and your stock broker may have laid out an award winning portfolio. But if that portfolio throws off dividends and capital gains every year while your accountant is telling you to cut back on dividends and capital gains for tax purposes, these two perfect pieces don't fit together in the same picture. Your investment accounts inside your 401(k) plan are perfect. Your investments outside your 401(k) plan can be perfect as well. But when you look at the two of them as part of one picture, you could end up much more aggressive or much more conservative than you had planned on, and it's all because they were looked at as separate, individual, perfect pieces, but the perfect pieces don't fit together in the same picture. So my job's to put the jigsaw puzzle together, keeping whatever pieces do fit together, and helping a client make whatever changes need to be made in the pieces that don't fit together, so we end up with a complete, coordinated, perfect picture. And it's fun. I spend my days putting together jigsaw puzzles.
