As a forensic scientist, I was responsible for preparation and analysis of patient specimens for the presence of drugs and/or medication. This process utilizes various automated aliquotting equipment, as well as liquid chromatography to determine the results. I then interpreted this data using Analyst software before it is certified by a certifying scientist. I was also responsible for maintaining a chain of custody for specimens that are involved in forensic investigation.

I was responsible for reconciliation of cytology specimens. I processed gynocological cytology specimens by opening, labeling, numbering, and verifying patient identity and entering information from the test requisition. I grossed and prepared smears, mono-layered cytospins, and cell blocks. I stained, cover slipped, collated, and booked all cases. I operated and was responsible for all clinical testing and the documentation and quality assurance surrounding both cytology and clinical testing.

I was originally hired to assist in field work being carried out during the summer, but was kept on as a full-time laboratory assistant due to my proficiency in the lab. I was mainly responsible for sub-sampling specimens and carrying out analytical procures on these samples. The procedures included, but were not limited to, chemical analysis (C, N, and P composition), DNA extraction (plant and fungal), slide preparation and cell microscopy, electrophoresis, and PCR mix preparation. As the senior research assistant in Dr. Richard Lankau's lab, I was often asked to train other undergrads in proper lab equipment/protocol techniques, and to manage their progress. I was also frequently asked to enter and organize any data collected by myself or the other undergraduates when required.
