Senior Staff Software Engineer
I am the development lead for a Golang based Kubernetes operator.In this role I led my team to design, develop, test, and release a Kubernetes operator. This RedHat Certified OpenShift operator, built on the Operator Framework, is responsible for the deployment, upgrade, and operation of NetApp's on-premise Astra Control Center softwareTo develop the operator we had to deeply integrate with Helm, Kubernetes APIs, APIs from other Astra services to deploy many microservices and manage the life-cycle of NetApp's Astra Control Center.I take great ownership and pride in the craftsmanship of our code. I have pushed the team to use unit testing as our standard moving forward, as well as developing third-party integration tests and early end-to-end deployment tests, before our more extensive test framework was online. I also pushed the team to use coding standards such as advanced linting and enforcing architectural boundaries in our build and pushing for unit test coverage, and integrated these into our build process. I developed extensive internal documentation allowing new, as well as existing, team members to be able to quickly understand the code base and contribute quickly. The leveled approach of the documentation also serves as great documentation for other engineers and product owners/managers working on other parts of the project to understand Astra Control Center and the operator.Engineers and leaders from all over the organization look to me for guidance into the scope and direction of our products, because I provide valuable insight and understand the healthy tension that exists between getting things done and doing things right.
Senior Software Engineer - Hci
I was the lead back-end API developer as well as system architect for the NetApp HCI Day 0 installation process known as NetApp Deployment Engine.I worked closely with front-end developers to develop a REST API that is used to easily deploy new NetApp Hyper Converged Infrastructure compute and storage hardware.My daily responsibilities included designing the back-end infrastructure, designing API endpoints using a Flask based Python service, as well as actual code implementation in Python 3. Engineers and leaders from all over the organization look to me for guidance into the scope and direction of our products, because I provide valuable insight and understand the healthy tension that exists between getting things done and doing things right.I led an effort to transform this monolithic NetApp Deployment Engine application that could only be released on a hardware node. Into a decoupled, independently releasable small set of microservices. This would allow for out of cycle releases as well as the potential of running the main business logic from the cloud as SaaS.I also took a rotation on NetApp's Solidfire ActiveIQ team. In this role I was able to gain experience working on a real-time streaming data SaaS based application. During my time on this project I was involved with the transition of the application from a colocation center to be exclusively hosted on Amazon AWS.
Automation Tool Software Developer
Automation Tool Software Developer: I worked on a software development team embedded in a Quality Assurance organization providing development and support for a number of Automation Test Tools. These tools provide test automation execution framework, test case management, configuration management, and data reporting. My responsibilities included both supporting legacy swing-based Java deployed applications, as well as, newly developed RESTful Java web services, using Hibernate and Microsoft SQL Server. I led a push to begin moving our tools to a microservice based continuous deployment model utilizing Node.js, Jenkins, Docker, and Dokku.Most of my time was spent writing code, but on this team we get a chance to act at times as architect, software developer, software tester, database administrator, and system administrator. I enjoy the exposure to the wide ranging responsibilities.We were responsible for maintaining several legacy code projects. I pushed the team to develop unit tests for legacy products that previously had none. I also led a charge to remove thousands of compiler warnings from our codebase, so that the compiler can help us improve the quality of our code. As an effect of this effort, we found several bugs that the compiler could have found for us, but were not noticed by developers as warnings were routinely ignored.
