In addition, I acted as camp counselor for various kids throughout the summer, where I supported them with transitions throughout the day, supporting their individual needs, providing emotional and empathetic support, and helping solve conflict through understanding and mediating. Camp Kirk allowed me to understand the specific needs neurodiverse kids need, whether it's the communication styles, the types of support, the sensory challenges, social struggles, and more. However, Camp Kirk also taught me all the wonderful strengths that can come with neurodiverse kids, such as the incredible capacity for focus, learning new things, brining energy and positivity wherever they go, and more. Camp Kirk taught me to be an engaging, understanding, and accommodating teacher and mentor to all types of kids. Show less

English Language Teacher

Tainan City, Tainan City, Taiwan

While working at AMC, I learned how to navigate teaching and communicating in different ways due to the language barrier, cultural differences, and curriculum. For kids aged 5-14, I created lesson plans in English to help encourage the kids to learn English, and engage them in a fun and educational manner. This included a variety of games and exercises, as well as creating a positive environment where it's ok to make mistakes. For kids aged 5-14, I created lesson plans in English to help encourage the kids to learn English, and engage them in a fun and educational manner. This included a variety of games and exercises, as well as creating a positive environment where it's ok to make mistakes. In these lesson plans, I would always try to communicate in simple terms so that the student with the least experience would be able to follow along, while providing challenging exercises to stretch the thinking of the top students. In addition, I would provide visuals for those that prefer to learn that way, as well as for those that couldn't understand what I would be saying. When not in the classroom, I would focus on building connections with the students through various games and activities at my desk. Whether it was creating art, math puzzles, making handshakes, or practicing English in a fun and relaxing manner. This made it more likely for them to ask me questions and feel safe in how they were communicating in English. In addition, they would get excited for my classes, because they knew that the environment would be safe, fun, and educational.Setting expectations was crucial as well. In Canada, some teachers are more lax, however in Taiwan, it is typically more strict. I was able to find a balance between fun and positive, and ensuring that the students were respectful, whether it was to me, to other students, or to other teachers. Overall, AMC allowed me to become more confident and skilled in my communication and adaptability, while allowing me to foster deep connections with the students. Show less
