Advisor: Dr. Ivan PelivanovPrincipal Investigator: Dr. Matt O’Donnell• Coordinated with Boeing on the implementation of a robotic laser ultrasound nondestructive testing system.• Designed, sourced, manufactured, and assembled an end effector for the laser ultrasound robotic system while complying with Boeing safety requirements. • Compiled the robotic system electronic requirements and coordinated with technicians to complete the wiring.• Created raster scan programs for a KUKA robot to simulate and verify the system set up.• Processed optoacoustic signals from the laser ultrasound system in MATLAB to reconstruct images of composite samples in search of defects such as delaminations, porosity, heat damage, and impact damage.• Designed, sourced, manufactured, and assembled the mechanical components of a sagnac interferometer. • Designed a position synchronized triggering system for a two axis translation stage by programming a quadrature encoder counter and integrating it into the overarching control program.• Updated a motor control program in LabVIEW to accommodate different hardware and test requirements.

Projects:• Design the 5-axis mill product line (UMC 500, UMC 750, and UMC 1000).• Provide manufacturing support for the UMC and Toolroom Lathe product lines.Responsibilities:• Used SolidWorks FEA to design iron castings that provide structural support under the rated loading conditions while maximizing castability and reducing costs. • Analyzed loading conditions, manufacturability, functional requirements, and aesthetic appeal to design cost effective sheet metal panels and brackets. • Interfaced with subsystem groups (spindle, tool changer, rotary, electrical, etc.) to ensure compatibility with new design changes.• Communicated with the machine shop, assembly line, and vendors to design new parts for manufacturability.• Manufactured prototype parts and assemblies for testing using a variety of CNC machine tools, 3D printers, press brakes and standard shop tools.• Released designs to production after verification through testing.• Communicated design progress and project status to senior engineers and management.• Modelled complex parts and assemblies using Solidworks design tools while adhering to the company standard version control and documentation procedure in the SAP product lifecycle management program.• Drafted and checked engineering drawings sent to the machine shop and vendors. • Designed and conducted vendor reliability tests on purchased components such as pneumatic cylinders, photoelectric sensors, and flow sensors.
