-Participated in an ongoing project to support the state endangered Barn Owl. Helped identify suitable locations for and install nest boxes in private barns near O'Bannon Woods. -Entrusted with a timber harvesting project, in which at least 100, eight foot lengths of wood were required. Conducted a survey of a large area and flagged appropriate trees, based on species, DBH, and location. Supervised a work crew from Indiana Department of Corrections as they felled and bucked the trees. Was responsible for ensuring a high quality product as well as the safety and security of all people involved . Transported the trees to another sate facility for further processing.-Felled and bucked many hazard trees using a variety of chainsaws at least one hundred hours of saw work. Was trained by a C sawyer on safe and effective use of different chainsaws.-Operated heavy machinery such as a tractor, bobcat, one ton dump truck, and a six wheel Polaris Ranger -Completed a variety of common ongoing park maintenance projects, such as basic carpentry work in support of a shelter restoration (measuring, use of power tools, etc), installation of gates on roads, painting and installing wooden signs, moving and stacking firewood and rip rap-Completed a forty hour long training from the Indiana Department of Corrections for the purpose of safely and effectively directing offender work crews. Some of the topics covered in this extensive training included avoiding criminal manipulation, proper procedures to search a work site for contraband, safe transport of inmates, first aid/ CPR, use of force, and personal protection -Dressed up in the official Smokey the Bear costume to ensure positive public relations. Responsible for interacting with visitors in a cheerful manner, promoting fire safety and responsibility, and taking pictures with visitors. Responsible for following the official Smokey the bear protocol.

Funded by the Michigan DNR ORV Trails GrantAs part of a team or independently, I was responsible for:- Maintaining and improving off-road vehicle trails, as well as trail heads and trail crossings-Using technologies such as a Avenza Maps to locate, map and describe problem areas and to track illegal trails.-Making reports regarding completed project work in conjunction with pictures and notes logged in Avenza Maps- Installing information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, trails, travel management, and safety- Posting usage signs, clearing trails, and extensive closing of illegal trails-Cleaning restrooms at trailheads, mowing, and general maintenance (e.g. painting signs at trail heads)- Restoring and assisting with the design & layout of foot bridges, retaining walls, and boardwalks along developed trails - Measuring, cutting, drilling, and general carpentry work in building guard rails and aggregate retaining walls- Moving, spreading, and tamping aggregate - Assuring recreation area and trails are maintained in accordance with standards- Checking for and maintaining compliance at dispersed camp sites - Cleaning and maintaining dispersed and developed camp sites- Maintaining developed recreation sites for camping compliance, on occasion- Identifying potential problems and hazards for the public and other recreational users- Contacting visitors to provide information about recreation regulations, opportunities, and current restrictions- Conducting National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) Surveys - Providing information about resource management practices in the area- On occasion, directing or leading one or two lower-graded employees engaged in recreation or trail maintenance work- Making day-to-day assignments and ensures quality of completed work- Serving as a point of contact with the community and public groups to generate interest in and utilization of forest recreation facilities
Directed Study In Forest Ecology And Phenology
While this is not a paid position, it qualifies as work experience**- Surveyed organisms at the Roemer Arboretum, the Nation's Road Research Reserve, and Indian Fort Nature Reserve to find candidates for the monitoring project.- Used maps, aerial photos, and satellite imagery to navigate survey sites and mark locations of study organisms. -Used handheld GPS units and digital cameras to document locations and phases of study organisms. - Verified the accuracy of a tree species map of the Geneseo campus and selected trees in order to participate in Project BudBurst .- Conducted weekly field data collection on the phenological state of native and invasive shrubs and trees. Continually updated National Phenology Network (NPN) with this data using the Natures Notebook app.- Encountered a problem with Natures Notebook app where it would not properly record our data. Worked with NPN and Dr. Apple to resolve problem and continure using application.- Found relevant specimens for the creation of a Geneseo Phenology Trail. If completed this trail will be a citizen science initiative for continual additions to NPN. -Selected to attend the Northeast Natural History Conference 2017- Analyzed large volumes of data in R studio and created a publication quality poster which was presented at the Northeast Natural History Conference 2017 as well as Geneseo's Great Day. The poster presented data in graphical and tabular form, had professional quality supporting text and displayed pictures from the field.- Kept a weekly log of activities to effectively communicate with my professor Dr. Apple on the progress of the project.
Field Research Technician
- While this is not a paid position, it qualifies as work experience**- The following were done as a field technician, in an independent study to monitor the damage of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, on hemlock ravine ecosystems. Surveys were conducted once every three months. Each survey consisted of three different locations.- Assisted in searching for and establishing suitable survey sites. - Collected aquatic invertebrates with kick seine net, sediment was disturbed to ensure a high quality sample.- Classified stream macro invertebrates using zoological taxonomic keys, used magnifying lenses when necessary for close up observation.- Recorded the number of organisms per family at three established locations per site.- Species abundance and distribution were used in a diversity indices to establish baseline stream health. - Identified surrounding tree species and measured DBH and canopy cover. - Took stream condition readings such as; dissolved oxygen, pH, phosphate levels using both electronic and chemical testing kit. -Measured stream velocity with a hand held Flowmeter and temperature with a thermometer. -Work was preformed in three different remote work locations. All technical equipment was packed in over rough terrain. Off trail navigation was necessary to reach work sites.
