Surfing has long been a passion of mine. As an instructor, I share the practice of this healthy activity with diverse clients. Giving group demonstrations on safety and proper technique provides opportunity to improve my public speaking. I choose to educate new students comprehensively, explaining the physical elements that create waves and how to respond during emergency situations. Oftentimes, the ocean produces turbulent currents that are dangerous for novices. Remembering how I was once in their place, I find sharing personal experiences helps alleviate apprehension. While instructing I maintain keen awareness of my clients’ emotional state to make their experience most enjoyable.

After my constructive experience teaching Human Anatomy, I decided to continue along the educator’s path. During junior year of college I became a teaching assistant in physics, working intimately with students to convey an understanding of mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics. Often, I engaged students with various levels of understanding, which required that I quickly assess and adapt to individual learning style and ability. In addition, weekly continuing education meetings were held amongst graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants to improve teaching strategy and reinforce my own knowledge to better serve current students.

My first experience as a teaching assistant was for Human Anatomy during sophomore year of college. Instructing complex material required comprehensive understanding of bodily form and function. Using anatomical models and bones, I conveyed to students the interrelatedness of different structures within the human body. Throughout the semester I led group demonstrations in identifying anatomical structures on models and diagrams. Working closely with students in a small classroom setting cultivated strong interpersonal skills. I structured my lessons conversationally, which allowed me to better understand students’ areas of weakness.
