As an intern with Moosewood, I have had the opportunity to collaborate on a variety of ecological and wildlife projects. This has included both continuing past projects and starting entirely new projects with landowners and conservation groups. The work itself has focused on project development and biological field research of a large variety of taxa within the New England landscape. Projects I have worked on have included SparcNet salamander surveying, American eel trapping, wood turtle and vernal pool surveys, and an assortment of other miscellaneous objectives. This work has required physical work in remote locations. It has also required proficient knowledge of power tools and other equipment, data collection, GPS navigation, as well as a wide variety of other skills.

I had the privilege to assist with a surplus of research projects as part of a work study during my time at Antioch. Projects included: moth trapping, vegetation surveying, ant colony research (article below), and passerine nest research. This provided me with more experience in GPS usage, field data collection, species identification, and research methods commonly used in field work.

During my second year at Antioch I had the opportunity to assist with the teaching and fieldwork portion of the Community Ecology of New England Landscape course at Antioch. I was able to help students ID native tree and plant species, determine past land use history, and create timelines of forest ecological events. This role was crucial in helping me develop leadership, teaching, and supervising experience through interacting and helping students on projects and assignments.

Carbondale, Illinois, United States

Through an internship at the Cooperative Wildlife Research Lab at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, I was able to work on on-going projects by actively implementing conservation and research practices. The projects included passerine nesting survival and northern bobwhite monitoring. Specific duties involved: active nest searching, nest monitoring, bird identification, data collection and entry, VHF telemetry, mist netting and collaring, camera trapping, small mammal trapping/handling/tagging, and predator (raptors, snake) surveying.

Inspection, testing, grading, sorting, sampling or weighing of soybean samples in a standardized laboratory setting. Accurately and correctly sort samples and enter data in computer databases. This position required working in an accurate and precise manner within specified time frames. I also had the opportunity to train other newer employees on certain aspects of the job.

Recognition, categorization, and packaging of chemicals and hazardous materials at customer sites to prepare for safe and legal transportation. This position gave me experience in customer service interactions, adapting to work situations, and working independently in remote locations.
