I am a software engineer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Institute for Disease Modeling. I work with infectious disease scientists to build models of disease transmission.

Started this job in November 2015 and worked my way from Masters Intern to Post Masters RA to staff Software Engineer. I work on a wide variety of projects. My primary tasks include building tools to detect and track animals in underwater and stereoscopic thermal video, with applications in both offshore wind and tidal energy domains. The Android app was a particularly good example of my ability to rapidly learn and apply new skills. I had never developed an Android app before, but in just 10 weeks I successfully built a custom app that uses many modern Android features like Room, LiveData, etc., and interfaces with external devices via USB and WiFi connections.

I was a web application developer for the Knowledge Encapsulation Framework (KEF), a flexible, customizable, collaborative, semantic wiki framework. Converted legacy ASP webapp code to C#.net for implementation with Microsoft SharePoint. Independently learned ASP, C#, and the .net framework over the course of the summer, and delivered a working, updated product at the end of the internship.

Assisted the maintenance division system administrator with Maximo interface updates. Maximo was used to generate and track all equipment maintenance requests (both preventive and general). It generated the forms which were printed and distributed to work crews, and logged when the work was completed, as well as any other notes.Also spent several weeks troubleshooting the reports generated by the water utilities department's control system. The reports used an old version of Excel and most of the calculation formulas were broken.Duties:* Learned to develop, update, and fix broken maintenance request forms.* Customized the information displayed on user screens.* Troubleshot SCADA overview Excel reports.
