Investigating the reactivity of iron sulfur clusters, commonly found in proteins, with nitric oxide (NO) gas--a signalling molecule relevant to the immune, nervous, and circulatory systems in humans. Additionally, investigating whether these clusters could be the point of cross-talk between NO gas and hydrogen sulfide, another important signalling molecule with a great deal of functional overlap with NO. Recently, investigations have grown to include reactivity of iron-sulfur clusters with reactive oxygen species, including peroxides and superoxide.

Worked on small molecule activation and redox chemistry on Ni(0) and Co(-1) centers toward reduction of carbon dioxide to industrially relevant chemicals i.e. acrylates. Further investigated oxidative addition to a Co(-1), the ability of the metal to maintain anionic character, and its ability to transfer that nucleophilicty to substituents. Utilized a wide range of synthetic and experimental techniques including, but not limited to, glovebox, schlenk line, and high vacuum line usage.

Guided students through their first experience with Inorganic Chemistry lab activities including NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and GC-MS sample preparation and analysis. Designed and synthesized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the purpose of selective carbon dioxide capture from atmospheric pressures and concentrations. Also investigated post-synthetic modification utilizing thermally-labile protecting groups to avoid interpenetration of the crystal lattice. Utilized a number of synthetic methods including solvo-thermal, tube furnace, and air free techniques-e.g. glovebox and schlenk line syntheses. Characterized products using NMR, X-ray crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Accelerated Surface Area and Porosimetry (ASAP) analysis.
