Senior Drill Sergeant
CurrentAs a Senior Drill Sergeant, I am responsible for the training, welfare, morale, and human resource functions of a sixty-soldier platoon. I also am responsible for leading three junior drill sergeants whose primary focus is to train sixty civilians into competent soldiers. Over a twenty-two-week period, we execute more than 70 training exercises, drawing from hundreds of lesson plans, to facilitate our end goal of creating US Army Infantrymen. Every training event requires a lengthy planning and risk management process through an execution phase, during which my team operates as primary trainers and simultaneously runs a 24-hour supply line operation that involves moving personnel, food, water, shelters, and ammunition to a wide variety of training sites. Some of these training missions are located remotely and can last up to a week in all weather conditions. This demands creative problem-solving and flexibility to maintain tight time constraints. As a drill sergeant, I am also responsible for a fleet of eight vehicles, each having its own maintenance and fuel needs. I am also responsible for being the first line of human resource service for my sixty-soldier platoon. This responsibility involves de-escalating equal opportunity and sexual harassment violations, as well as addressing pay and vacation day concerns. The ultimate goal is building a better and more cohesive team from novices.
