Ryan Mcneil Work Experience Details
  • Bluepath Labs (8(A) & Sdvosb)
Jr Data Scientist & Ml Researcher
    Bluepath Labs (8(A) & Sdvosb) May 2024 - Present
West Point, New York, United States
  • Hunter College
College Assistant & Data Analyst For Assessment & Ir
Hunter College Oct 2019 - Present
    Manhattan, New York, United States
    ● Reported to the directors of both departments. This involved independent time and task management, managing priorities and facilitating work interdepartmentally.● Preprocessing and analysis of data (campus- and CUNY-wide) for institutional review. o R, SQL and Tableau for data analysis; data visualization/map generation (GIS software, etc.) for various audiences. o This involved predicting the needs and use cases of data like course completion, enrollment rates, etc. I had to have an understanding of who would be using this data as well as how they’d be accessing it, and then I’d curate it and publish it to fit those predicted needs.● Prepare analyses and monitor assessment for Middle States Reaccreditation of the university.● Compile and produce a central database of learning outcomes for all programs at Hunter College. This standardized and modernized learning outcomes assessment, something that had never been done before and was necessary for the future of the institution. o Higher education institutions need to conduct regular educational assessment, including providing “learning outcomes” in order to retain accreditation. Before I worked on this project (from inception to completion), this centralized information did not exist. o I worked with the Director of Assessment to identify this project, gather its requirements, implement it, and disseminate the information to professors, directors, and the public. o Implementation involved collecting learning outcomes info from disparate sources: department websites, directly contacting professors, and building some from scratch. o In order to disseminate the information to the public, I compiled the data and added it to our department website (using HTML, basic DevOps, and web design). ▪ I stored the central database in a secure location so that only non-sensitive data is accessible.● Maintained department continuity during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis while undergoing a budgetary crisis.
  • The Graduate Center, City University Of New York
    Quantitative Researcher
The Graduate Center, City University Of New York Sep 2022 - Dec 2023
    New York, United States
    ● Published a scientific paper about on social, economic, and labor trends on a national scale. I wrote this paper with Dr. Paul Attewell. (Journal publication pending; see below.) This work made use of my strong analytic background, my ability to think on multiple layers of abstraction and keep the big picture in mind.● Research: labor trends, CUNY retention and enrollment trends, and the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. o This involved a lot of exploration such as constructing maps in R just to see what I could find. We didn’t start with an objective in mind. We got a lot of data and I had to play around with it for a while and just see what was there.● Data science: statistical analysis of large datasets (U.S. Census, DOL, and OIRA datasets) using STATA, R, and Python.● Research: national college retention trends, and the socioeconomic inequities therein. o There were so many different datasets and data sources that I worked with both for this paper and as a researcher outside of this paper. Measuring trends and drawing conclusions across multiple, massive datasets was one of the big challenges of this position.● Curating, cleaning, & maintaining all project datasets, including large and sensitive datasets. o I had to invent and implement major security protocols surrounding this data, including (but not limited to) utilizing software and hardware which secured the machines that stored and processed this data.● Liaise between Principal Investigator and state & federal institutions to find and access data not yet publicly available. o I had to be extremely proactive here. e.g.: I tracked down & spoke with an analyst from the DOL to explain our research and obtain an advance copy of 2023 data (which had not yet been made public).● Anticipate future research and collaboratively explore innovative research opportunities based on present data and findings.
  • Center For Advanced Study In Education, Cuny
    Researcher
Center For Advanced Study In Education, Cuny Sep 2021 - Sep 2023
    New York, United States
    ● Lead researcher of every project that came across the director’s desk (Dr. Deborah Hecht). o It became my job to manage all data, archive, and client projects.● Creating and refining scientifically-approved, effective teaching practices within and across over a dozen funded ongoing projects.● Manage a team of five employees including research assistants, Jr. Data Analysts, interns, etc.● Construction and distribution of surveys via the Qualtrics platform. Surveys varied by project, ranging from small (~10 respondents) surveys for collecting opinions from professors, to large (1000+) surveys for assessing customer satisfaction for large organizations (like Boys & Girls clubs of America) in for use in improving their services. o Varied in depth/importance from NSF funded research to individual teacher reviews.● Onboarding recent hires: how to use SPSS and NVivo, facilitating workshops using PowerPoint, teaching basic data analysis skills, custom software, and identifying opportunities for collaboration/improvement.● Solely responsible for managing our central database and shared drive containing data andreports across dozens of projects (including sensitive and restricted data). Before I started, there was an ongoing issue of losing old files. I fixed this by spending over a month tracking down reports and the data they were built from and carefully organizing and storing it all in a hierarchy of folders within a new secure department shared drive. Without this work, CASE would have been unable to deliver on numerous data analysis projects.● Liaise between representatives, educators, and administrators to conduct interviews, answer stakeholders’ questions, and report on progress.● Data collection and analysis for an audit of undergraduate research throughout CUNY. Before we did this, students at each CUNY campus were technically eligible to pursue RA positions at other CUNY colleges, but this information was rarely shared or even easily accessible.
