I oversaw our Events Services and Desk Attendant staff teams and interfaced with Facilities Management, Dining Staff, Campus Security along with campus organization and external event coordinators while on the clock.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant at Valparaiso University I was fortunate enough to work on two awesome projects, the sensorless speed control of shunt-wound DC motors and a vision control system that controlled the position of a ping-pong ball on a metal plate. I also had a third significant project where we implemented a fully autonomous driving system on a go-kart. This was my senior design project and not a research project. In developing a control method for sensorless speed control of shunt-wound DC motors we utilized an SSR, generative power of the motor, voltage division and a characteristic map of the motor to to calculate the motors speed in real-time and control to a specified speed. The final product was published to ASME where I am the second author. The paper is titled 'Speed Control of Shunt-Wound DC Mortors Using Switching Technique. For the vision system and ball position control we utilized a plate with motorized tilt along the X and Y axes to position a ball anywhere specified on the plate. Scope of work included redesigning the plate and motor linkage to reduce inertia and improve responsiveness, learning LabVIEW, and implementing vision processing through a computer that fed processed vision data to a cRio that controlled the plate and ball position.Though not as a research assistant, as a Senior Design Project my team also successfully implemented an autonomous driving system on an electric go-kart utilizing ROS, LiDAR, Sonar and other auxiliary sensory along with a suite of on-board micro-controllers and processors and one off-board microcontroller that communicated start, stop and kill commands to the kart. My scope-of-work within the project was orchestrating control on the steering system, aiding on the braking system, programming microcontrollers, co-leading the control strategy for the kart, manufacturing components for all systems and bridging the mechanical and electrical engineering groups within our team.
