About Ryan Smith

Hi, I’m an interdisciplinary designer, and I work in the fields of visual design and UI/UX. A perfect day for me includes research and ideation, well-organized design systems, typesetting and colour compositions and working with grid systems for web-based products, mobile applications, or even a print design project. In addition to my work as a designer, I have lectured at universities in Canada regularly since 2013 and I am a sessional faculty member at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, BC, Canada. My principles, methodologies and processes are informed by the interdisciplinary and collaborative creative practice I’ve maintained throughout my career. This foundation, combined with my passion for data-driven research, vigorous ideation, user testing and prototyping, enables me to realize solutions that exceed today’s ever-growing need for user-centred experiences and visually stunning design.Lastly, outside of design, I love Saint Bernards, I’m an avid cyclist, and in my free time, I run an art book publishing company called Brick Press that I founded in 2012.

During my graduate studies as a part of the MDes 2020 cohort, I was a research assistant under Dr. Garnet Hertz at The Studio for Critical Making at Emily Carr University. My research centred around how humanities-based modes of critical inquiry – like the arts and ethics – can be directly applied to building more engaging product concepts and information technologies. One of my notable contributions to the studio included acquiring a Risograph printing press and onboarding it to an already well-established publishing operation within the studio. The studio's efforts are responsible for disseminating vast amounts of critical literature to designers, artists and academics world wide. The addition of the Risograph amplified the studio's production capacity through sheer capability and the added dynamic of multiple colour printing options.
