As a Marketing and Human Resources Specialist at Metro Signs and Lighting, I act as the front-line communicator for both internal and external organizational goals. I find engagement and challenge in using my creative writing abilities to simplify complex messages that are then uniquely tailored to an audience's perspectives. This activity takes the form of video storytelling, newsletters, email blast campaigns, social media posts, sales presentation tools, process graphics, and company-wide emails. My communication process is built on a foundation of active listening and simplicity. If I listen to people closely and without emotional bias, someone will tell me exactly what they want to hear. A few clarifying questions later, I have the basis of my message. I take that message back to my organization's list of objectives and explore common threads. Next, I select an effective medium (email, text, video, etc.) that is accessible and familiar to my audience. And lastly, I put together and revise my content with the audience's knowledge base in mind. The most energizing part of my work is undeniably the level of personal and professional support that I am able to provide for our employees. Whether it is providing unique educational opportunities or discussing effective reward/recognition systems with our vice president, my work has an impact on many stakeholders. But it is the more personal exchanges that deliver the greatest effect. Lending a considerate ear to a disgruntled employee is a simple action that promotes a caring workplace, makes an employee feel validated, increases organizational commitment, and even provides trail-heads for uncovering organizational issues.
