After a long career in the Chicago Tribune newsroom, I've taken what I learned there to start my own graphic design and editing company. Today, we do design and editing work for clients including the University of Chicago Medicine, Comer Children’s Hospital, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Rocky Mountain Institute, Pew Charitable Trusts, Energy Futures Initiative, MxD, Experience Princeton, Philadelphia Film Society, Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, Mission Possible Partnership and more. In early 2018, Tribune Publishing announced plans to consolidate the print production of the company’s major metropolitan newspapers in Chicago, calling it the Tribune Design and Production Studio. Over the next six months, I helped plan the transition, working with teams in Chicago, Orlando, New York and other cities to develop new production processes and workflows.

During this period, when I wasn't designing for the daily paper, I helped lead a variety of entrepreneurial Tribune initiatives and internal efforts, including: • Redesigning the iOS app and print magazine for Printers Row, the paper’s weekly books product• Helping create a digital-only Evening Edition of the paper sent to subscribers’ email• Helping develop iPad magazine apps covering the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears and our photography department• Helping coordinate moving the production of 38 small papers purchased by the Chicago Tribune into our newsroom• Managing the paper’s annual Pulitzer Prize entry submissions—a massive, months-long project near-and-dear to the paper’s leadership team

In this role, I worked with newsroom leaders to design and edit the Tribune’s most important paper of the week, the home of our best investigative and features projects.

During this era, I served as the paper’s primary daily Page 1 Design Editor, working with top editors throughout the newsroom to shape our coverage. The job required strong design abilities, sharp copywriting skills, a photo editor’s eye and a diplomatic temperament. During these years, I led one major redesign of the paper and contributed to another.

During this period, I designed for the A-section, Metro and Business departments.

During this period, I supervised the sports designers and designed most section fronts.

I started by Chicago Tribune career as a systems analyst helping the paper install the CCI NewsDesk production system. After the system launched, I transitioned into a role as a sports designer.

I began my career at Tribune Company’s Fort Lauderdale paper, where I designed and edited for all sections. I also helped lead the installation of two versions of the CCI NewsDesk production system, writing training material, teaching classes and supporting users.
