During summer of 2021, the intern will perform field, laboratory and on line activities as part of the NASA citizen science project. Initially, the focus will be on reviewing draft protocols for sampling, fluorescence and turbidity measurements and field testing of these protocols working with both SERC personnel and citizen science volunteers (e.g. riverkeeper organizations). As part of the testing, water samples will be taken and analyzed with several types of laboratory instruments (fluorometers, turbidimeters, spectrophotometers). The intern will also help develop protocols and test results from observations using a smartphone app, Hydrocolor. Online activities will include working with acquired data and developing outreach materials for recruiting and training citizen science volunteers.
