  • Hummingbird Solutions/Takeout Solutions
    Founder
    Hummingbird Solutions/Takeout Solutions Nov 2002 - Aug 2004
Launched a startup company with two other partners. Primarily responsible for most technical aspects of operating the company including developing new software products for the company. The latest product was a web based, object oriented/J2EE application on the Jboss/Linux/PostgreSQL platform with heavy use of EJBs for database access and business rules. This product was designed from scratch and allowed restaurants to create and place their menus online and allowed consumers to place orders that would then be sent to the restaurant. A complex monitoring engine was developed in Java to ensure that the restaurant received the fax orders within a certain time-frame. Created various MVC/STRUTS/Spring/Hibernate based frameworks for this system. All builds and deployment scripts were written using ANT. The company's first product was a self-serve kiosk for use in grocery/deli retail environments. This product was touch-screen based and a successful version was demoed at Harris Teeter. A larger company purchased this technology from Hummingbird and has begun implementing it at select Lowe's Food stores. Takeout Solutions was unable to secure a backer for the online ordering product which forced the company to dissolve

Worked on large-scale projects within the financial industry. These projects integrated with various backend financial systems and went through the entire life cycle of development all the way from object-modeling/requirements gathering/documentation to actual coding and testing. I was also placed on various "swat" teams where analytical and deep technical skills were needed to solve complex and difficult Java-based problems under tight time-lines. The projects were primarily on the Websphere/AIX/DB2/MQSeries/Java platform but the iPlanet Application Server was used in some cases. All of these projects utilized EJBs for database access and business rules. All of these projects utilized the STRUTS and MVC design pattern and some of the initial designs were documented using the Rational (RUP) product suite. One of my projects also involved the discovery, design, and implementation of a web services/XML/SOAP messaging infrastructure as well as a build and deployment infrastructure utilizing the ANT build tools. EJBs were primarily exposed as web services and were callied from other external components via SOAP/XML. I was also involved in the performance testing and debugging for many of these projects, especially in the Middleware/EJB layers.
