The Hartland Hotel - S.F.

The Hartland Hotel was built in 1913 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally called the Hotel Gartland in honor of its first owner, a local street paving contractor. The hotel was later renamed the Hartland to better reflect its location in the Geary Corridor, in the heart of the tenderloin. A unique feature of the Hartland Hotel is the mural entitled Tenderhart located on the side of the building in Myrtle Alley. The mural was completed in 2001 by a group of young artists from Meridian Gallery’s internship program. The artists were inspired by conversations they had with residents at the Hartland Hotel and even chose to feature some of those residents in their painting. The Hartland houses several commercial ventures including a flower shop, bar, record shop and clothing store.
