About Ryan Mayers

I am a molecular neuroscientist interested in how genetic variants associated with major neurodegenerative disorders disrupt intracellular trafficking and organellar dynamics to contribute to disease progression. I use robust skills in human cell culture, advanced microscopy approaches, and classical molecular biology and biochemistry approaches to address these questions.Currently, I am a PhD candidate in Brian Polster’s lab at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where I study how disruptions in mitochondrial bioenergetics, structure, and mitochondrial-lysosomal interactions contribute to neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and traumatic brain injury. I previously completed my MS in Biotechnology in Evangelos Kiskinis's lab at Northwestern University, where I worked on nuclear import and cytoskeletal deficits in motor neuron models of ALS.

Currently a Neuroscience PhD student in Prof. Brian Polster's lab (Department of Anesthesiology)I use a mixture of fluorescence microscopy, iPSC-derived and immortalized microglial culture, platereader-based respirometry, and classical molecular biology and biochemical assays to assess dysfunctional mitochondrial bioenergetics and dynamics resulting from microglial pro-inflammatory activation or genetic ablation of Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia risk factor genes. In parallel, I also study the mechanism of action of several known or candidate mitochondrial therapeutics to explore their potential for repurposing as neuroprotective interventions in neurodegenerative disease and injury.
  • University Of Maryland School Of Medicine
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
University Of Maryland School Of Medicine Aug 2023 - Dec 2023
    Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Teaching assistant for GPLS 737, "Proseminar in Experimental Design"This is a required course for second-year neuroscience PhD students, and covers the basics of hypothesis design and grant-writing, with a core focus on NIH-style Specific Aims and Research Strategy pages.
